For the average user, there is a rule in AstLinux; !!never edit a system  
file that doesn't begin with:!! ''/mnt/kd/''

Exceptions to this rule:

  /etc/logrotate.d/*
  /etc/rc.modules
  /etc/sudoers
  /etc/tarsnap.conf
  /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules

The files above may be directly edited.
